Workplace Safety During Winter

Winter weather can cause problems for your drive to and from work. It can also lead to problems when you are walking to and from the building and when performing your job.

Here are some tips to keep you safe at work during the coldest months of the year.

  1. Wear slip-resistant footwear. Watch your feet when walking on snow or ice. Wipe your feet on a rug when you get inside. If the bottom of your feet are still wet, you may slip and fall. Also, if you notice water on the floor, report it to the facilities manager in your building.
  2. If your job requires you to drive to various locations throughout the day, make sure your vehicle is ready. Fill up with gas in the morning. Take extra time to make sure your lights, brakes and windshield wipers are working properly before you begin your commute. Reduce your speed on snow- and ice-covered roadways.
  3. If you work outside, dress properly for the weather. Some days in winter are sunny and mild. And there are some days where it’s snowing, cloudy and bitterly cold. Be sure to dress in layers. Wear thick socks and slip-resistant footwear. Cover your head with a warm hat. Be sure you also have gloves that will keep your hands warm, and are appropriate for the work you will be doing.

These tips will help to keep you safe while working this winter season.
